Yesterday there were comments from the Government about sending the military up, but so far nothing has happened other than an extension on the no-fly ban until Tuesday morning.

The only aircraft with precise atmospheric sampling equipment are the two Martin WB-57's operated by NASA. Now I am sure it would be in the US's interest to loan one of them to the UK?

The amazing thing is that the authorities are taking advice from the Met Office. Now with the best will in the world, the Met Office are not experts on aircraft engines, and neither are the air traffic authorities or the various governments involed. The latter claim to be taking advice but the airlines alledge that no-one has actually spoken to them, their technical guys or the makers of the engines!

I really think its a case of as no-one is prepared to say its safe, it must be dangerous! The problem is no one seems to know what acceptable levels are!Kenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11480592190745851875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2025360530946712082.post-60378726658500438712010-04-19T01:34:27.298+01:002010-04-19T01:34:27.298+01:00Ken, what I don't understand is why the variou...Ken, what I don't understand is why the various air forces did not go up to investigate the amount of ash in the atmosphere. Why did it need BA, KLM and Lufthansa to send planes up? Or were the RAF unwilling to take any risks as well? Let's face it, those guys have parachutes as a last resort.

Seems like the main difference between Indonesia/Mt St Helens and Iceland is that in those cases there was a much higher density of ash in the atmosphere.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2025360530946712082.post-50182305616535407712010-04-19T00:09:23.547+01:002010-04-19T00:09:23.547+01:00You're quite right but not being a British air...You're quite right but not being a British aircraft its not newsworthy here!

The incident was very much like the BA one, where the visibility was severely impaired by the ash particles.Kenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11480592190745851875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2025360530946712082.post-74527777753950069502010-04-18T21:26:25.863+01:002010-04-18T21:26:25.863+01:00Ken, did you forget about the KLM 747 that lost al...Ken, did you forget about the KLM 747 that lost all 4 engines over Mt St Helens? Charlotte averages ...It was indeed only a snapshot. Charlotte averages over 1,400 aircraft movements per day, and whichever way you look at it, thats a large carbon footprint! It is interesting that despite the recession people do still appear to need to travel from A to B as quickly as possible and the fastest affordable means is by air. The "green" brigade may well advocate the use of wind turbines as the favourable energy provider, despite their proven inefficiency (both in power generation and cost) and yet they still go on holiday to the Algarve, Florida or wherever, without the slightest concern to their impact on the environment. I think for many of them its fashionable to be "green" and support so called renewable energy projects. In reality of course, nuclear energy is one of the greenest of all power sources, not to mention the most efficient and one of the most cost effective.Kenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11480592190745851875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2025360530946712082.post-58175265387081235512009-11-02T07:30:02.827+00:002009-11-02T07:30:02.827+00:00That's a lot of aircraft and only a snap shot....That's a lot of aircraft and only a snap shot.
